Seventy-five years ago, registered Brahmans grazed just two blocks off Central Avenue in St. Petersburg, Florida.

This was another Pinellas County — a peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico where cattle ranches, orange groves and beach cottages could still exist within a landscape almost impossible to reconcile with the city today. Even Doc Webb’s sprawling Webb’s City seemed to point toward what was coming, anticipating the enormous shopping-center and retail development boom that would soon transform communities across America.

Clyde J. Keys’ Brahman Ranch belonged to the world that came before it.

Today, downtown St. Petersburg has become a mecca of waterfront living, its skyline increasingly defined by soaring condominium towers as old hotels, storefronts and buildings of character gradually give way to another era. For those who call St. Petersburg home, the contrast can be remarkable: cattle and citrus once occupied ground now measured among the city’s most valuable real estate.

The surviving art proudly introduces the ranch’s herd sire, Dusty Manso, and its “Beefy-Type Brahmans.” More than seven decades later, the bull, the typography and the Keys name still tell the story.
