Blackie belonged to a generation of Hawaiian watermen who embodied the best of the olden days — effortless style and the beach culture of Waikiki. Alongside legends such as Rabbit Kekai, these were surfers whose soul, timing, balance and feel for the water made riding a wave look almost effortless.

Nearly silhouetted above the water, Blackie is caught in an easy arch as the Hot Curl runs across the face at Canoes — a fleeting moment from an extraordinary era of Hawaiian surfing.
